Family reunification: when exile separates before bringing together

Behind administrative procedures, family reunification tells the story of waiting, distance and hope for separated Congolese families.

Political or humanitarian exile never affects only one person. It also affects spouses, children, parents and relatives left behind.

Family reunification then becomes a central step, but often a long, costly and emotionally difficult one.

For many Congolese, family separation is one of the deepest wounds of exile.

Video calls replace family meals. Messages replace presence. Children sometimes grow up far from the parent who left in search of protection.

Reuniting a family after exile is not only an administrative procedure: it repairs part of a life broken by fear and forced departure.
